Design of a modular range of tool cases

For SKF we designed a modular range of tool cases to efficiently store their wide range of maintenance tools. The new cases offer multiple unique features to maintenance professionals.

Design research

Design research

We conducted observation-based research to reveal unmet needs and problems with the current cases. We observed how maintenance professionals used, stored and transported their SKF tools. We saw, for example, that it’s hard to identify a case in the storeroom: only the short side is visible.

We also interviewed stakeholders in logistics and retail. The research visits revealed twelve valuable insights that inspired us to develop several meaningful new features.

Workshops

Workshops

The insights gathered in the design research sessions were used as valuable and inspiring input for a creative workshop in which we brought together different stakeholders to develop fresh ideas. Having all perspectives on board (marketing, R&D, supply chain, etc.) enabled us to approach the project from all sides and come up with the best possible ideas and build commitment.

From insights to solutions

The new cases have been designed with the professional user and working environment in mind. From observations and interviews with these users, three main topics emerged:

‘Smart storage’: The cases can be stacked neatly and safely because of the carefully selected modular dimensions and stacking details.

‘Information is everything’: Labels with crucial information about the content are placed on the sides of the case and enable quick identification of the required tool kit.

‘Built to last’: Robust aluminium closures on the corners are durable and distinctive to represent the well-known SKF product quality. A lot of attention was paid to ergonomic details such as a carrying handle that is big enough to be used with gloves.

These improvements were combined with a new consistent brand look and feel.

The iconic blue cases reflect the SKF brand values and make the user feel ‘proud to own a SKF tool’.

Smart modular system

Smart modular system

The company’s Maintenance Products division sells tool-kits that are used by professionals all over the world to install and service bearings. SKF used to ship the range of over 60 different tool kits in almost as many generic tool cases.

We developed, in close cooperation with SKF, a new modular design that requires not more than 5 different cases for all available tool kits. Dimensions have been carefully selected to make optimal use of available pallet space. The result is a substantial reduction of cost.
