Development of a display system

Development of a display system

A historical new reality in Amsterdam

After a 4 year renovation the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam has opened its doors again. We played a vital role in the development of the displays and the flooring system in the courtyard.

New reality for the museum

New reality for the visitors

We created a solution for the displays that would maintain the right oxygen, temperature and moisture levels.

At the same time we had to realize DOK architect Liesbeth van der Pol’s concept for the museum. In this concept the focus was on transparency and visibility of the collection. We combined our technical ingenuity with a strong sense for the role of display design in this historical environment to provide the museum with the displays it deserves.

The museum’s courtyard has been given an astonishing glass cover designed by Ney&Partners. The cover has a lot of functional benefits. However, as a result of closing the space, the acoustic properties became an issue. A normal conversation in the courtyard was almost impossible.

Together with LBP/Sight we developed an innovative flooring system that improves the acoustic properties and makes the space a pleasant area for orientation, a quick snack or just admiring the building.

Sustainable solutions

The modularly build showcases can be positioned both upright and horizontally. Glass panels of different sizes can be used, offering maximum flexibility in exhibition set-up. The separate parts can be reused time after time, realizing a considerable costs saving and sustainable design.

Creating conditioned air only inside the displays as opposed to the entire museum space was a major breakthrough resulting in considerable reduction of energy use.
