Get to know us

We are a design consultancy from the Netherlands. We love to work alongside our clients in turning their goals into products and services that create economic, social, and environmental value – not just for brands or consumers, but all of us.

Why we are here

The Internet of Things transformed the way we create and interact with objects. Today’s customers demand products and services where the physical and digital are seamlessly integrated – and for today’s design solutions this means exploring the links between trends and concepts, man and machine, potential and possibility.

The connected era offers us the opportunity to create more value for more people by envisioning how good things should be, not accepting how they are.

It’s a mix of experience, expertise, https://www.flex.nl/en/smart-connected-product-design/and excitement about the possibilities of (connected) technology that we offer our clients to take advantage of this moment in time. By combining insights from in-depth consumer research, technical innovations made in the workshop and our clients’ commercial expertise, we create tools and experiences that connect the dots between people, technology, and business.

Where we come from

When they founded FLEX in 1988, Jeroen Verbrugge and Ronald Lewerissa wanted to design ‘solutions that sell’. Design is not a goal but a tool to reach other objectives: profit, cost reduction, making brands more relevant, creating user benefits, economic continuity and ultimately even a better world.

But with previous careers in General Electric and Vicon, Ronald and Jeroen had a clear view on the relationship between  client and designer: design should meet the purpose of the client, not the other way around as quite a lot of designers tend to believe. FLEX quickly gained an excellent reputation with projects that truly made a difference. The innovations in suitcases, bike accessories, bathroom products and cookware were all of crucial meaning for clients.

In the late 90’s we were the first agency in the Netherlands to offer structural packaging design, a discipline left untouched by designers until then. Iconic packaging solutions for Albert Heijn, Bols, Grolsch and Lego underlined the creative power of our agency and helped to steadily grow to a team with 30 designers and engineers.

Consumer insights have always played an important role in the innovation process. We were one of the first agencies to adopt co-creation and develop our own tools like the Design Game. We filled our toolbox with more creativity techniques, trained ourselves in facilitating brainstorm sessions and finding methods to open other people’s creative potential. All because we believe creativity is the key to a new reality. In the most recent years, it turns out that what we think is just as valuable as what we make. Our design thinking approach proved valuable in innovation projects for De Nederlandsche Bank, refugee camps and the municipality of Almere.

Over the last 25 years we created more than 400 products that delivered financial success for our clients and despite the fact that it has never been our aim , a lot of our designs have won international awards and are incorporated in museums all over the world. We are grateful that MoMa, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Chicago Atheneum are displaying our designs for the world to see. We like to thank RedDot, IDSA, ID Annual Design Review, IF, Dieline Awards and many other award organizations for honoring our work.

Meet our team

We employ the best designers we could find. A designer’s individual skills are important, but even more important, is the way we blend our creativity together within the team.

The joy we find in doing ‘grand’ things together ensures that our projects really make a difference. For our clients, for consumers, for society and for ourselves.

The joy we find in doing ‘grand’ things together ensures that our projects really make a difference. For our clients, for consumers, for society and for ourselves.

That’s what a lot of our work boils down to: listening to people and bringing them together with technology.
