Nudging parents towards good indoor air quality

Nudging parents towards good indoor air quality

The value of IoT

For Marussys’ brand Aai.care we developed ‘First Breath’. This ‘Internet of Things’ product informs parents about indoor air quality, enabling them to create a healthy environment for their loved ones.

Internet of Things

Scenarios

Our Korean client had some great ideas for connected products that would help create a healthier environment for infants. We translated those into friendly, practical, yet sophisticated design. The monitor and its connecting app inform parents about the indoor air quality, enabling them to create a healthy environment for their loved ones at any time. First Breath was nominated for a Kind + Jugend Innovation Award 2017.

Baby lungs are susceptible to air pollution. A healthy indoor air environment is essential to their growth and development. First Breath is an indoor air quality monitor that scans the air and displays what the baby is breathing. Sometimes parents are not even aware of the harm they’re causing with cleaning products, cooking or poor ventilation. For ‘First Breath’ we explored various scenarios how data on the type of pollution can be presented and how parents can be alarmed  to take necessary action. The matching app educates the parents about pollution and coaches them to improve conditions in the baby’s room.

Every organisation today is thinking about how to connect its products and services to the internet.

Desirability

Prototyping

Our challenge was to create contemporary design for a high-tech product, that shouldn’t look technical at all and fit seamlessly in any baby room. From a range of concepts the iconic house-shape design that refers to ‘indoors’ was considered the most desirable one. The monitor’s illuminating ring quickly shows when a pollutant reaches its threshold level by changing colors.  The wooden base ensures a warm, friendly appearance.

In close collaboration with the Aai.care team, we worked from prototype to prototype (made by FLEX/prototyping) to optimize the product. Because the device must be capable of making accurate measurements the air flow through the device was a crucial aspect of our development efforts. The prototypes were key in finding the best solution for the component layout and the design of the air vents.

UX

Engineering

In addition we also we also worked on the user interface of the First Breath app, which connects the device with the baby’s parents. Various ways of interaction and presenting data were explored. We focused on a user experience that would enable parents to interpret data correctly and act accordingly.

In order to get the product produced with a high level of quality and refinement we have a deep understanding of the manufacturing processes and materials. We took great care in the selection of suppliers, construction of the tools and specification of the wood and thermoplastic materials.

The value of IoT

The value of IoT

First Breath started with some ideas around making data valuable. We turned these ideas into a tangible and feasible product. Our design skills made it desirable and our technical expertise made it work. The user centered approach created a smooth experience allowing users to make educated decisions when it comes to indoor air quality.
