Food preparation re-invented

For Tomorrow’s Kitchen we designed a microwave cooking method that makes preparing healthy food hassle free, consume less energy, taste better and reduce food waste.

Modern lifestyle

As a result of working in the field of food and food preparation for many years, we couldn’t help but notice that the way people prepare their daily meals is not in line with today’s modern lifestyle. We cook our food in large pots for the whole family at once. However, in most families, it’s rare that everyone eats at the same time. Often one of the parents works late or one of the kids has to go to soccer practice early. As a result, most of the days of the week dinner is eaten in 2 or 3 shifts.

With our traditional way of cooking, food gets (re-)heated 2 or sometimes even 3 times. This reduces flavor and nutritional value and introduces food safety issues if it isn’t done properly. It also generates a pile of dishes: pots & pans, plates, storage containers,… Besides, why does every member of the family have to eat the exact same thing? Some of us prefer mild and others like it hot!

Our vision is to prepare each family member’s meal exactly the way they like it, in the amount they need and freshly cooked when they are ready to eat.

Tomorrow's Kitchen

The International Innovation Company shared our vision on the future of food preparation. They recently launched a new brand of kitchen products: Tomorrow’s Kitchen. ‘Tomorrow’  stands for their pursuit of innovative ways of food preparation. It also refers to their firm believe that in everything we do there we have a responsibility to the world of tomorrow. We are so happy to have Tomorrow’s Kitchen as a committed partner to produce our concept and take it to market worldwide.

Prototyping

Prototyping was not the end of the innovation process but the beginning. In order to truly re-invent cooking, we did a wide range of experiments with very simple prototypes made from modified existing products. We learned how preparing individualized meals in the microwave is possible in smaller cooking vessels and that these vessels could also be the products in which you serve dinner and how that would reduce the number of dishes.

We started to understand which types of recipes could be prepared this way but also which ones couldn’t. We experimented how much time could potentially be saved with our new method of cooking and how it would reduce energy consumption. In the end, all the data we collected gave us the confidence that the idea of personal cooking was feasible.

Design

With the results of the experiments in the back of our minds, we designed a radically simple range of cooking products. The core of the range is a triangular glass bowl with a silicone lid. The bowl cooks the vegetables and protein components of a full meal for one person. The valve in the middle of the lid can literally blow off steam when needed. The lid has ‘ears’ on the side that facilitate taking a hot bowl out of the microwave without oven mitts. The lid has a small spout in the front. When the flexible silicone spout is placed in the right position excess liquid can be strained.

The reason for the curious triangular shape is that it allows for three bowls to heat up simultaneously on the turntable of the microwave. We also designed a range of accessories. Some to increase the functionality like a hot-box that facilitates preparing carbohydrates like rice, pasta or potatoes. Some to enhance the dinner experience with a beautiful wooden ‘lazy susan’ or ceramic serving trays.

Red Dot

Recently the design of the Single Serve Steamers received the RedDot design award. It shows that great design, considering the environment and daily convenience can go hand in hand. We hope that you’ll enjoy cooking with the Single Serve Steamers.

If you would like to try them, they are available at many retail outlets both on-line as well as off-line for example: Amazon, Bol, Cook&Co and Blokker
