Changing behaviour by product design

Changing behaviour by product design

Saving 20% energy

In the pursuit of making our society more sustainable, we will need creative ideas and solutions, and collaboration will be essential. Creativity and cooperation were key in the development of the Wattcher as well.

Smart energy monitor

The Wattcher by Innovaders is an energy monitor that shows the energy consumption of your entire house. It shows which appliances have a high energy consumption ad where you can save energy and money.

In combination with the Wattcher, comes access to Wattcher Online; a step-by-step guide. Here you can view graphs of your use of electricity and gas and compare your data with that of others.

Cooperation is essential

Cooperation is essential

On some occasions adding the name of a famous designer can help to make a product a success. In this case, we asked world renowned Dutch designer Marcel Wanders to take care of the design. Marcel Wanders came up with a modern design for the Wattcher that people would love to have in their homes.

We ensured flawless functionality and easy installation for the Wattcher and made sure the manufacturing price met the target. Systec developed the electronics that safeguarded fast and accurate measurements.

Please visit the websites of Marcel Wanders en Systec for a different view on this project, or send an email to Jeroen.

Changing behaviour

Research shows that the Wattcher alters the behaviour of the people who use it. Through giving mere insight into energy consumption, the Wattcher reduces energy use on average by 10%.

Dutch energy provider Eneco monitored energy consumption by their customers and concluded that savings up to 20% could be achieved. Sustainability starts with you and your Wattcher!

Hundreds of different energy meters

Designing a universal way of reading a multitude of different meters exactly was a big challenge. Consumers have to be able to install the system easily and correctly, for it to take accurate measurements.

Shapes that seem simple are not always easy to produce. This project showed this and it took a lot of skills and creativity to take Marcel Wanders’ design sketches and turn them into a product that can be manufactured in large quantities.

Mock-ups, Models and Prototypes

Mock-ups, Models and Prototypes

Without making a large amount of prototypes, the Wattcher may never have become a reality.

Models with a high level of finishing were used to excite and entice potential partners in the project. We used simple mock-ups to research people’s reaction to the installation procedures. We made various prototypes to make sure our technical solutions worked. Last but not least, we produced a small series of products for market research, to see if this would be a product that people would buy.
