Recently Erik Tempelman, founder and owner of consultancy company eriktempelman.com and Senior Lecturer at TU Delft, proudly published his book (Not) Safe For Designers (NSFD). It’s an industrial designers’ guide to all sorts of questions and dilemmas related to structures and materials. Our Founder and Managing Director, Jeroen Verbrugge, wrote its preface.
The book ties together all insights Erik Tempelman gained over more than 25 years, engineering essays on structures and materials. It’s written for anyone interested in this field, explicitly aiming at product design. It covers a broad perspective of engineering knowledge, together with his thoughts on smart and future materials, and distinguishes itself from lots of existing literature with its practical twist.
Jeroen enjoyed writing its preface and claims that a book like this seems to be more relevant than ever. Even in our digital era, we’ll always require physical products. With an increasing scarcity of raw materials, it is more important than ever that we create ‘products that last’ and that designers can level with engineering and experts at our suppliers and clients to succeed in this quest. The book is a great source of inspiration for any designer. For students, teachers, or professionals in this field, it is a must-read ‘industrial design manual.’
